Guest lecture

Happy happy to say that I’m delivering a guest lecture at FIMS at UWO (er — Western University) in a couple of weeks: a look at the whats and whys of trade book publishing in a collections context! Specifically, I’ll look at how publishers target their intended readership through both content and presentation. Some hands-on work invites students to opine at length about what they think works, what doesn’t, and what books offer true value for money.

I’ve done versions of this one twice for U of T and it’s been very well-received. And for me it’s a great instructional bridge between my publishing past and librarian future.

What do you think of guest lectures? Have you done one (or more)? Do they keep the curriculum fresh? Are they a respite from the drone of a lecturer? (I speak from the perspective of a droning lecturer.)
