Job Shadow: The Library at St. Mary’s General Hospital

Two weeks ago, I visited St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener to meet and job shadow Elaine Baldwin, who heads the medical library.

Elaine has an MLS and is a one-woman force of nature — not only at St. Mary’s but in the special library community at large. She negotiates consistently excellent consortia rates from vendors, runs a topical book club that’s both active and thriving, and has managed, with flair and professionalism, to secure philosophical and practical buy-in from the very top of the organization. A requirement of many new hires at the hospital is a one-hour session in information literacy! Maybe this isn’t that uncommon but I still think it’s fantastic.

Elaine is an excellent example of someone who makes the most of limited budgets and resources, smiling all the while and working some pretty great footwear. Thanks, Elaine!
